Despite reports of a contract having been already

closed for execution of the first section of the projected

Whampoa desp-sea port, it was learned yesterday that the

situation has been advained only to the point of tenders

being called for. The details will be released in a

few days for the open bidding, in Hongkong and Shanghai.

The first section of the work comprises the

construction of a my bunt, for the snaœsodation of

five or six large vessels at one time, slong the lert

bank of the Pearl <iver opposite shespos Island, sad

the dredging of the river channel, for a distance of

10 miles between the Bo.l end No.2 Bars, to permit the

entry of ships of over 8,000 tone.

This initial operetion will cost under $2,000,000;

anion has siready been provided by the National Treasury,

according to a statement by the Mayor, ir. Taang Yang-po,
